Spotlight On

The Suez canal is currently controlled by Egypt. It is used frequently as a transportation system for ships between the mediterranean and red seas. It is important becuase of the vast quantities of resources shipped through the canal. One important commodity is oil.

Egypt

The 2011 egytian uprisings were a result of economic hardships, police brutality, and corruption under the regime of Hosny Mubarak. The uprisings started on January 25th, 2011, and culminated with Hosny Mubarak stating that he will not run for reelection. No single opponent faced him, instead a collection of small factions all joined to form vast hordes of angry citizens in Cairo.

The cuban uprising against spain

The first major attempt at a cuban revolution was the 10 years war, in which the cubans fought the spaniards. This was defeated by the spanish, after the death of 250,000 cubans. The next major development was the Spanish American war. In this war, the U.S. invaded cuba and ousted spain from the island. Leaders included Antonio Maceo, and in the end turned out to be fairly succesful.

William McKinley's assassination

William McKinley, 25th president of the Untied States was assassinated on September 5th, 1901. He was assassinated while at an engagement to meet the public by Leon Czolgosz. He was shot twice, the first grazing his shouldder with the second lodging itself in his stomach. Doctors easily removed the first, however doctors had trouble locating the second, and decided to leave it in. McKinley appeared to be recovering, but 8 days later he suddenly got worse and died from gangrene. Czolgosz was put to death a little over a month later.

The Spanish American war.

The Spanish American war took place in 1898 between spain and the United States. The war started after spain was accused of bombing the us battleship maine. The U.S. quickly and decisevly defeated the spanish, with key battles at manilla bay and the invasion of cuba. The spanish american war led to the American takings of guam, the phillipines, and puerto rico. The spanish were crushed and were never again considered a world power.

Do you think the U.S. has been imperialistic?

Do you think the U.S. has been imperialistic?
Not in the sense that many european countries were so no.

modern imperialism

This cartoon shows uncle sam, with each leg caught in a trap reaching for bait left out in pakistan. The author appears to think we are stretched too thin. In a way I agree, right now we are pushing it, but I think that is because we have forgotten why we are fighting, and becuase of that many question why we are still there and are unwilling to give their resources.

political cartoon

The new diplomacyThis political cartoon shows one of the figureheads for american imperialism, Theodore Roosevelt along with a club that reads, "the new diplomacy". The artist does not appear to like Roosevelt, and likely is not a fan of U.S. imperialism at all. To me the U.S. did not take over anywhere that was not already under the control of another country, and they did not to my knowledge make the dependent country's situation worse. So for that I do not see anything wrong with American Imperialism.

political cartoon

This political cartoon illustrates one of the big movements of new imperialism,... the carving up of Africa. The artist's opinion was that the european powers were carving up Africa, and I'd say that is fairly accurate.

Chapter 26

In chapter 26 we learned about "new imperialism" and some of the effects that it had upon Europe and the world. This period spread the new ideas and technologies developed in the west to almost all the corners of the world. The social impressions left by the western invaders can still be felt today, and the economic explosion caused by the vast new markets help catapult the world further into the modern age. The point of this blog is to illustrate the importance of this time period. EQ- What was the social impact of "new imperialism"?

As seen clearly in Japan, new imperialism encouraged the east to adopt western ideas and technologies, and helped the east to develop.
