Spotlight On

The Suez canal is currently controlled by Egypt. It is used frequently as a transportation system for ships between the mediterranean and red seas. It is important becuase of the vast quantities of resources shipped through the canal. One important commodity is oil.

Egypt

The 2011 egytian uprisings were a result of economic hardships, police brutality, and corruption under the regime of Hosny Mubarak. The uprisings started on January 25th, 2011, and culminated with Hosny Mubarak stating that he will not run for reelection. No single opponent faced him, instead a collection of small factions all joined to form vast hordes of angry citizens in Cairo.

The cuban uprising against spain

The first major attempt at a cuban revolution was the 10 years war, in which the cubans fought the spaniards. This was defeated by the spanish, after the death of 250,000 cubans. The next major development was the Spanish American war. In this war, the U.S. invaded cuba and ousted spain from the island. Leaders included Antonio Maceo, and in the end turned out to be fairly succesful.

William McKinley's assassination

William McKinley, 25th president of the Untied States was assassinated on September 5th, 1901. He was assassinated while at an engagement to meet the public by Leon Czolgosz. He was shot twice, the first grazing his shouldder with the second lodging itself in his stomach. Doctors easily removed the first, however doctors had trouble locating the second, and decided to leave it in. McKinley appeared to be recovering, but 8 days later he suddenly got worse and died from gangrene. Czolgosz was put to death a little over a month later.

The Spanish American war.

The Spanish American war took place in 1898 between spain and the United States. The war started after spain was accused of bombing the us battleship maine. The U.S. quickly and decisevly defeated the spanish, with key battles at manilla bay and the invasion of cuba. The spanish american war led to the American takings of guam, the phillipines, and puerto rico. The spanish were crushed and were never again considered a world power.
